Late this afternoon, legendary football coach Joe Paterno was forcibly removed from a position he’d held for the last 45 years, at a university where he’d worked for the last 61.  During that time he had led the Nitanny Lions through 548 games, 409 victories, 5 undefeated seasons, 37 bowl appearances, and 2 national titles.

No other football coach of the modern era was as adored, and well respected as “JoePa”. To both his players and his fans, he was a father figure, a mentor, and a role model; a ideal of both leadership and graceful humility.  He was the antithesis of flash: a simple man, all but invisible on the sideline but for his trademark horn-rimmed glasses and non-descript windbreakers.  For Paterno, old-school teamwork was the ideal. He expected his players to work together in support of the whole, rather than as a support group for a single superstar looking for self-glory.  His players wore jerseys without names because they, like Joe, adhered to the belief that, “When there is no name on your jersey, you have to find other ways to get noticed.” Continue reading »

By the time this gets posted, it’ll be sometime around mid-afternoon on Saturday, May 21st, 2011.  For those that haven’t been paying attention, today is (was) supposed to be the Christian day of Rapture; where Jesus returns to collect the souls of the faithful and carry them directly to heaven, leaving the “unsaved” behind to continue their empty existences until a massive disaster destroys the world once and for all.  The source of this prediction is Christian broadcaster Harold Camping, who bases his claim on what he refers to as extensive biblical analysis and mathematical research.  Camping had made similar claims before; previously scheduling the Rapture for September of 1994 and declaring he’d made a mathematical error in his calculations when events failed to abide to his schedule.  Then, and now, his followers undertook drastic changes in their lives, preparing for the promised end of times by abandoning their jobs and homes, casting aside friends and non-believing family members, euthanizing pets, and arranging for their finances to exhaust themselves by the last day.  Lives foreclosed by the living. Osama Bin Laden is dead.

After countless years, both before and after 9/11. After two poorly conceived and executed wars still lacking the light of resolution. After the loss of 2,340 coalition soldiers, 8,739+ Afghan forces, and tens of thousands of civilians deaths, the world’s most wanted man has been killed by a U.S. operative in a mansion outside of Islamabad in Pakistan.  Should we feel any safer? Does this mean the terror that has gripped the nation for the last ten years will fade? Continue reading »

Storytellers draw on an almost endless well of characters, some based on people they’ve encountered in real-life, others thumbnail sketches of people they’ve observed that have been provided a backstory and behaviors plucked from the teller’s imagination.  The purpose of the latter is to serve as a kind of verbal shorthand for presenting characters that an audience can immediately recognize, much the same way a character actor in a film presents a “type” that viewers can immediately relate to. The two men stood facing each other in the twilight, paused for a second, and with an exchange of wisecracks moved together to join in a firm handshake. It was the first meeting of a pair of minds joined together in the ether – hopefully the first of many – an opportunity to chew the fat over subjects both diverse and deep.  The younger man had traveled far, following an extended invitation to drop in for a visit with the country squire.  The squire himself had driven a shorter distance, to help the youngster find his way in the dark.  It was wintertime under the mesas, and the night air shivered as it raced to replace the light from the sun.
