Osama Bin Laden is dead.

After countless years, both before and after 9/11. After two poorly conceived and executed wars still lacking the light of resolution. After the loss of 2,340 coalition soldiers, 8,739+ Afghan forces, and tens of thousands of civilians deaths, the world’s most wanted man has been killed by a U.S. operative in a mansion outside of Islamabad in Pakistan.  Should we feel any safer? In the springtime of 2001, after a hard day of work at the office, my wife sat down next to me on our living room sofa and asked if I would turn down the TV so we could have a talk.  Thinking I was in trouble, I sheepishly did so, turning to face her while bracing for a tongue lashing.  She sat down next to me, and with a hint of tears forming at the edges of her eyes, took my hands in hers.

Every single American should immediately recognize, and adore, the above quote – if you do not, you have failed to honor your first responsibility of citizenship.  The first amendment, the cornerstone of the United State’s Constitution’s Bill of Rights, lays out, in no uncertain terms, the core truths that “We the People” hold self-evident. Among these are the key freedoms necessary for a healthy Democracy: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and most pertinent right now, freedom of religion.  Particularly the free exercise of religion – the very act of worship.  There are no caveats or footnotes, no fine print or “out” clauses; the United States was founded with the express intent of ensuring that no single religion be denied the right to exist, nor any religion be declared more “true” than another. As if there weren’t enough tragedy in the world today, Glenn Beck has just announced he’s launching an online “university.”  Not happy with being just a malignant jackass, Beck now apparently feels that others should shoulder the mantle of hypocrisy and intellectual illiteracy that he currently wears (out in public, no less).  Oh, and he wants you to pay for the privilege, because, you know, 32 million is year is just barely enough to survive on these days.
